Congratulations are in order for the San Francisco Academy of Art University’s graduating students!
Graduating usually means cute new garbs, an inspirational speech or two, and the conclusory cap toss. But for the graduating students of the Academy of Art University, it will be a two-day long ceremony (April 23-24) including a graduation fashion show, student exhibition, and fashion symposiums featuring industry elites like Fashion Illustrator David Downtown and L’Officiel Paris’ Editor-In-Chief Patrick Cabasset.
A select few had the opportunity to showcase their designs in New York Fashion Week, which was pretty swanky indeed! The Academy of Art Fall 2009 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week runway show highlighted pieces from five collections, including that of Qianya Martin, Scott McFarland; and design teams Cat Janky and Heather Howard, Myoung Hee Kim and I-Shan Liou, and Ivanka Georgieva and Emily Melville.
The shows color palette was fall/winter classic: navy, charcoal, chocolate brown, and sandy neutral, though not without splashes of brighter hues. However, the designs were unique to every designer and his/her inspiration.
Qianya’s beach inspired line mixed knitwear with sheer elements. With photographic aid, Cat and Heather revived early twentieth century America using modern eco-friendly fabrics. Ivanka and Emily translated abstract landscape paintings from artist Leslie Shows to create their own art in motion. And for the fashionista who thinks one has to substitute utility for fabulosity, check out Scott McFarland’s or, Myoung and I-Shan’s longer bulky knits. A hand-warming pocket and cowel neck are perfect for weathering the seasonal cold.
After passing fashion week with flying colors, we can see why The Academy of Art University’s graduating students’ two-day ceremony is well deserved.
