Last Thursday December 3rd in New York City The Airline Ambassadors celebrated CHILDREN OF THE WORLD at the United Nations. Airline Ambassadors provides humanitarian assistance to children and families in need as well as international relief and development  to under-privileged communities worldwide. AAI is the only non-profit in the world leveraging connections with the airline industry to facilitate humanitarian efforts, and is recognized by the US Congress and the United Nations. AAI has been granted official U.N. Non-Governmental Organization status.

President and Founder, Nancy Rivard is employed by American Airlines and has been since 1976. She was moving up the management line of American Airlines but, decided to move back to her original position as a flight attendant. She founded Airline Ambassadors in 1996. Originally, AAI began with airline personnel bringing relief  and aide to smaller underdeveloped countries whenever Rivard and her colleagues had a layover. AAI has now expanded to 6000 member including medical and business professionals, students and retirees. Rivard has gotten American Airlines to get involved and provide needed aircrafts to deliver shipments to smaller countries. Monthly volunteer mission groups organize in the several selected countries to distribute relief and aide to the needed countries.

Joaquin Antuna for Paz y Cooperacion: 2009 Global Compassion Award

Thursdays event presented two  awards. The 2009 Global Compassion Award went to Joaquin Antuna and Paz y Cooperacion. Paz y Cooperacion was founded by Joaquin Antuna in 1982.  It has been centered on promoting a movement of non-violence and creativity and on building a world of solidarity.  Airline Ambassadors has partnered with Paz y Cooperacion since 1996 with their annual international school competition, The Peace and Cooperation School Award. The school Award encourages students and teachers to reflect upon the important issues of our time.

The 2009 Global Humanitarian Award went to The McCord Foundation, Jim and Darlene McCord. The McCord Research Foundation is the philanthropic arm of McCord Research, supporting programs and causes close to the hearts of Jim and Darlene McCord. The foundation currently funds activities in three areas at The University of Iowa; research fellowships in the University of Iowa Biosciences Department; and independent labs at Michigan State University, Millersville University and the University of Tennessee working on research cures for Buruli Ulcer which effects many children in Africa.

Darlene McCord informed the audience that Buruli Ulcer is the quiet epidemic that is affecting children in Ghana. Buruli Ulcer is a skin disease caused by bacteria that is a genetic cousin to the bacteria that causes leprosy and tuberculosis. Like leprosy, patients with Buruli ulcer develop ulcers on their body that can eventually cripple and even kill them.

The CHILDREN OF THE WORLD event last Thursday raised continued awareness and acknowledged those coming together through shared resources and public engagement to make an international global difference. To help celebrate the evening performances were led by George Sigma and Jamia Nash.  Mr. Sigma debuted an original one of a kind song, entitled, “PEACE”, which in 3 minutes and 12 seconds he includes the word ‘peace’ in 77 most spoken languages and idioms.

Trevor Project Summer Gala Honoring Dustin Lance Black! By Jim Halterman

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

ProgressivePulse.com had the honor of attending the Trevor Project’s Summer Gala in New York City on Monday night.  Held at the fabulous Capitale (130 Bowery Street, NY NY), the event is one of the key gatherings of the site to not only celebrate the hard work that the organization is doing but to also continue raising funds to keep it running strong.  As the only 24-hour suicide prevention line for LGBTQ youth, the support can never be enough but Trevor is saving lives and spreading their word of help nationwide.

Caroline Rhea

Galvin Creel

Hosted by the hilarious Caroline Rhea (in a fabulous Valentino dress) who joked about her weight even though it’s now been eight months since the birth of her child.  Rhea is one of those comediennes who feels like your best friend standing up on stage talking about life, celebs or the large number of great looking gay men assembled in support of the Trevor Project.  Rhea did an entertaining set of jokes to start off the evening.

First up was Gavin Creel, most recently nominated for Best Male Actor in a Musical for the current Broadway revival of Hair.  Creel was accompanied by Canadian singer Robbie Roth on guitar as they sang a wonderful, inspiring song, For Nancy, which was just as fitting for the Trevor Project mission.

Cheyenne Jackson, Lance Bass & Francisco Armenta

The handsome pairing of Cheyenne Jackson and Lance Bass was next as the men introduced the three winners of the Colin Higgins Youth Awards, which honors three LGBTQ youths who have overcome personal challenges only to triumph and show the rest of the world that anything is possible.  The winners this year were Francisco “Frank” Armenta, Jr (age 21), Lance Hicks (19) and Terra Tempest Moore (22).  Each of the winners spoke with emotion and showed just how much passion they have for their lives.  It’s no doubt that we’ll more than likely hear a lot from these empowered young people in the future.

Judy Gold

Judy Gold

Judy Gold was on hand with her hilarious comedy, which covered everything from her being a Jewish, lesbian comic to her biting stories about dealing with her overbearing mother.  Mark Consuelos and Carson Kressley also were on hand to introduce moments during the evening.

Executive Director and CEO of the Trevor Project, Charles Robbins talked about the work that the Trevor Project is doing including the “I’m Glad I Failed” school program and the new TrevorSpace social network exclusively for LGBTQ youth.

Caroline Rhea returned to the stage with more comedy and to play auctioneer for three great prizes with proceeds that would go to reach the $25,000 goal that had been set to raise during the Summer Gala.  Besides an Ugly Betty walk-on speaking role, there were also two great trips that were snatched up by eager auction bidders!  While the auction almost reached the goal, the donation cards that were collected after the show undoubtedly helped them push beyond the mark.

CNN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell accepted the Trevor Commitment Award, which, according to the event’s booklet, “annually recognizes a company or organization that, through its policies, initiatives, and other efforts demonstrates a commitment to LGBTQ causes and is a prominent, public example of corporate acceptance of individuals regardless of sexual orientation.”  From the reel of LGBTQ coverage that CNN has included in it’s daily programming over the year, they are truly worthy of this award.

Jewel Performs

Jewel was then introduced and blew the roof off the Capitale with her powerful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and her classic song “Who Will Save Your Soul” was just as meaningful as ever, especially in regards to the reason the Capitale was filled with Trevor Project supporters.

Finally, as if the night hadn’t been emotional enough, Gavin Creel amusingly revealed his crush when he introduced the winner of the Trevor Hero Award, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.  As if you didn’t know, Black wrote the Academy Award winning film, Milk and is striving to bring more awareness as well as provide an example through volunteerism and/or occupation to LGBTQ youth.  Like his Oscar speech, Black was eloquent, passionate and inspiring with the lengths that the gay community has gone to get where they are today but how the work is not done and gay youth is definitely a group that still needs our attention.  Progressive Pulse was there to record the speech so you can hear his empowering words, too.

Dustin Lance Black: Audio Speech Below!

As always, the Trevor Project put on a great show and, without beating the message over our heads that it’s all about donations, made everyone in attendance want to give support in whatever way possible.  Can’t wait for next year’s event! Monday, March 30th, 2009

The Global Block Party in support of Earth Hour 2009 was a true success on Saturday March 28th! Since Progressive Pulse represents progressive content in New York, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, we wanted to show our support for Earth Hour and reach out to our neighbors and meet some new friends. We’re happy to report that through our first ever online streaming radio broadcast we were able to extend the block party globally. Thank you to all of the progressive artists and musicians who contributed their music to this broadcast. Your music is re-shaping and transforming the music landscape and introducing us to global sounds. For all the music heard check out our links page with all of the artist information. Thank you to Bryan Galvan, of DancePodNation.com for hosting the broadcast. You’ll soon be able to hear Bryan on Progressive Pulse! A big thank you to Joyce Cooling for giving us a sneak preview of her upcoming album, “Global Cooling” out April 7th and available on Amazon and iTunes. Click below link to download “Global Cooling”:

The Global Block Party would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors: Frey Vineyard Organic Wine, Eel River Brewery Company, SIGG, TripTych Catering, Fort Lee Pizzeria and Italian Foods and The Whole 9 for co-sponsoring and Mike Diaz, Dragonbyte, for working tirelessly on the Progressive Pulse website so it would be ready for our events – Thanks Mike!!

The 3-city parties not only reminded us that turning off our lights conserves energy but, also showed how beautiful everyone looks in the candlelit glow!  In New York we turned out our lights early and kept them off all night. Fox 5 News showed up and covered the event. To see the footage click here: Fox 5 coverage.  Jim Halterman (below left), who writes, Progressive Television was also featured on the news and celebrated the night with his partner, Boyd Uabhaibool (below right, Gary Lennon center).

Nana Soul who was featured on our Global Block Party radio stream stopped by to show some love!

Thank you to Jon Coffelt (pictured below left), artist and also from The Whole 9 for attending  and Tameika Lawrence (below far right) who has done an incredible job helping us with our Global Block Party.

Check out some additional pictures shot at the New York Global Block Party.

Vivian Meade, my co-creator of Progressive Pulse, reports the following from her Global Block Party Bay Area:

Our Global Block Party in the San Francisco Bay area was a success! The party was actually held in my new loft in the newly renovated Packard Lofts in downtown Oakland.

ProgressivePulse.com Theater/Movie Blogger, Kevin Thomas (above right with me) hooked us up with delicious food from TripTych.  James Mayagoitia, an aspiring Actor, was on bartender duty as he worked the room and kept everyone’s glass filled with Organic Frey Wine and Eel River Organic Beer.  And our good friend, Paul Untalan, brought the sinful cheesecake.

Michael Zack worked the room spreading the word about our Co-Host the Whole9.com and Odilon Vasconcelos did a great job taking photos when I turned the lights off at 8:30 to officially kick out “Earth Hour”

We had a great mix of people from Guitarist/Vocalist, Joyce Cooling and some of her band members, Singer, Joshua Klipp, KKSF’s Miranda Wilson and Independent Filmmaker, Tony Wilkins talking about his new movie  “The Mo Diaries”.  Check out our interview with Tony.  We also had a furry friend show up with her owner to show support for the World Wildlife Fund, the sponsor of “Earth Hour”

Earth Hour was such a success that when I started to turn the lights back on at 9:30pm everyone shouted, “Keep them off!”  Everyone enjoyed reconnecting, meeting new friends and coming together for a great cause, Our Planet! Check out the coverage photos below:

Lisa Schultz, creator of The Whole 9 and our co-sponsor of our Global Block Party in Los Angeles informed that 200+ guests showed up for the party featuring a performance by Bryan Brown. Click here to read her blog: www.thewhole9.com/blogs/theinsidescoop

OUT 100 PARTY – Cheers to a Wonderful Celebration!

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Last night was OUT Magazine’s annual OUT 100 PARTY -salute to 100 of the most celebrated Gay people in the past year who are generating a buzz, making a difference or just being fabulous! The event was held in New York City at Gotham Hall. The awards ceremony was more of a party sponsored by Absolut Vodka but, featured awards handed out to actor  Cheyenne Jackson, designers Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared and writer, Dustin Lance Black and producer of the new “Milk” film accepting the award for Gus Van Sant. Bishop Gene Robinson received the award for “Newsmaker of the Year”. Bishop Robinson is the first out, non-celibate priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination. He reminded the audience to not let the media create separatist feelings between certain ethnic groups and Gay people regarding Proposition 8.  The event was hosted by Chelsea Handler (pictured above with Out Editor in Chief, Aaron Hicklin) who talked about her support of Gay rights. Presenters included newcomer/singer Adele (check out her video for, “Cold Shoulder” below) who received a cheerful welcome, the always beautiful and sexy,  Padma Lakshmi of Top Chef, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and John Cameron Mitchell.

OUT  presented the partnership of Levi’s Brand, Hetrick-Martin Board of Directors and Regent Media to launch the “Liquidity Reserve Fund”. The Hetrick-Martin Institute is the oldest and largest organization to fostering the healthy developement of at risk young people. Especially lesbian, gay, transexual, and questioning (LGBTQ) youths aged 12-21. HMI offers a wide range of supportive programs and services, and has become a globally recognized safe haven where young people can be who they are without fear of being ridiculed or treated differently. The Reserve Fund allows the Hetrick-Martin Institute to continue to provide outstanding programs for extraordinary LGBTQ youth. Check out their website to find out how to donate and get involved.

Nikka Costa (Pictured above and right) gave a funky, soulful, powerful and exhilarating performance which reminded me of the soul superstars of the 70’s.  She definitely had the crowd dancing and feeling no pain! Similary was newcomer, Sam Sparro (Pictured below left) who also brought his young soulful self to the stage. Sparro danced, gyrated and sang like a pro! Standout songs included, “21st Century Life” and the hit, “Black and Gold”. The final performance brought the 30 year reunion of Labelle (Nona Hendryk, Patti Labelle and Sarah Dash) performing new song, “Rollout” as well the classic, “Lady Marmalade”. Patti had everyone basking in last week’s Obama victory getting the audience to cheer, “Yes We Can”. The most amazing moment of the night was when Patti  brought 3 gentleman onto the stage to help her sing the classic song. One of the guys, actor Wilson Cruz (pictured at the top left) stepped up to the plate and began to belt out the song causing the audience to go crazy! Wilson began dancing with Nona Hendryk and finally, Patti had to get involved. Together Cruz and Labelle gave a diva finale to “Lady Marmalade” which will go down as a classic New York moment! Congrats to Will Gasperoni and everyone at OUT for producing an amazing night!
