Incognito Delivers Transatlantic Music Brilliance with Help from Chaka Khan, Mario Biondi and Leon Ware! Steve V. Rodriguez

rpm

Incognito is now in their 31st year of making their signature brand of Soul, Jazz, Dance and Fusion. Always incorporating a nod to the soulful past which include sounds of Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and Tower of Power, yet pushing the boundaries of music to new heights incorporating that signature live concert dancehall vibe.

Led by front man Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, who has surrounded himself with equally gifted musicians and vocalists, Incognito has just released their brand new album, Transatlantic R.P.M.  Inspired by some of his 70’s icons growing up, Bluey transported himself out of his London comfort zone and ventured into American soil to collaborate with a stellar line up including the one and only Chaka Khan, Motown legend Leon Ware, and renowned Italian singer Mario Biondi.

From the start, Transatlantic R.P.M. is in full throttle serving up the classic Boz Skaggs hit, “Low Down”. Remakes can be tricky but the song has always begged to be transported into the next generation and what better way to feature this classic than with two celebrated artists like Italian singer Mario Biondi who conjures up Barry White and the original soul diva, Ms. Chaka Khan! The minute you hear these two work their magic you know there’s no turning back. Khan weaves her signature long lasting notes like no other artist can, which brings chills down the spine.

Bluey penned the original gem, “The Song” specifically for Khan who weaves her sultry and effortless vocals around this melodic mid-tempo track. Bluey and Khan layer vocals upon scatting alongside a landscape of exquisite orchestration. It doesn’t’ get much better than this, it’s pure bliss!

Fans of Incognito will welcome the refreshing addition of the prolific rapping of Luckyiam PSC in the track, “Everything We Are”. The fusion of inspiration on this song transcends any current direction music is headed especially with the lyrics, “…you’ve got police but, first consider peace, next remember music is best when you release…your soul”.  The same is true on “Gotta” that features the spoken word brilliance of Ursula Rucker – think early Jill Scott, which serves up that iconic Philly sound.

“1975” is another infectious groove that celebrates the midpoint of a decade that brought us Santana, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, and Marlena Shaw to name a few.  With the Incognito horn section in effect and the vocals of Joy Rose this is destined to be one of the top tracks of Transatlantic R.P.M

R&B chanteuse, Maysa delivers her smooth and sweet vocals on “Your Sun My Sky” to one of the most vivid vocal tracks on the album. The same is true to the subsequent track, “Line in the Sand,” sung so beautifully and honestly by Leon Ware.

Along the way we meet up with lead singer Christian Urich of groove based band, Tortured Soul offering a sexy dance track with layers of quick phrasing and vocals including an additional layer of falsetto that makes this a standout track.

The brilliance of the project is that we are transported on every listen to Bluey’s transatlantic journey of musical escapades. Transatlantic R.P.M. is a reflection of passed albums that told a complete story and avoided a one hit wonder. Today we gather our music in a different manner but this album pulls the best of the past and shines a light on a brighter future.

Anna Rose’s Debut Album: “Nomad” Delivers Beautifully Rich Vocals with Layers of Rock and Blues! By Steve V. Rodriguez

Anna Rose "Nomad" album out now

Anna Rose "Nomad" album out now

In some ways it’s an exciting time for a recording artists to release new material. American Idol is no longer a guarantee that the winner or even runner-up will make it big. Record stores are practically obsolete, music videos are primarily viewed online and big name artists like Christina Aguilera have postponed concerts due to low early sales.

For new artists like Anna Rose, it can be a refreshing transitional time in music to debut new material. Anna has been performing in New York and Los Angeles in small venues and released her self-titled EP last year which offered a glimpse at a promising new artist on the horizon. On June 8th, she just released her brand new album, “Nomad” featuring the five tracks on the EP including the optimistic, “The Four Corners”, the heartfelt “In The Morning View”, the gritty “Picture” and the L.A. blvd inspired, “Wilshire”.

“Nomad” rounds out the set with new material including the bluesy, and my personal favorite, “I’ll Be Gone”.  Another welcome addition to the full length album is the empowered strength of Rose featured in, “Walk Away”. “Dare” is a beautifully orchestrated and arranged song that is equally matched by the singer’s honest and reflective lyrics.

Anna mixes personal and poetic lyrics alongside her gifted rich voice. She carefully layers in delicate acoustic guitar arrangements that the singer plays herself. Many of the songs build to exquisite crescendos utilizing stronger electric guitar chords and well constructed drums that never take over but, always elevate one step behind Rose’s vocals.

Catch Anna Rose perform this Summer including this Friday, June 11th at R Bar in NYC and July 9th at Canal Room. Also check out her site for updates: www.annarosemusic.com

Hank & Cupcakes Video Interview

Hank & Cupcakes Video Interview

Since arriving in Brooklyn from Israel a little more than a year ago, Hank and Cupcakes have captivated New York with an explosive show noted for its simmering sexuality, irresistible dance pulse, and hard to pigeonhole sound.

The drum and base duo say that they are trying to make pop music without having a pop sound.

Their new self titled EP Hank & Cupcakes features four stellar tracks including the infectious “Ain’t No Love”, an revamped version of Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control” and the video for “Pleasure Town”.

We sat down with Hank & Cupcakes recently to discuss their sound, touring in Tel Aviv and Brooklyn this Summer and their dual role of band mates and lovers.

COBBLESTONE JAZZ: The Modern Deep Left Quartet – Album Review

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
Cobblestone Jazz Modern Deep Left Quartet Album Cover

Cobblestone Jazz Modern Deep Left Quartet Album Cover

Cobblestone Jazz, or as they are also known as The Modern Deep Left Quartet are comprised of: Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate, Tyger Dhula and Colin de la Planta (aka the Mole). The four members have been performing live under the latter name for nearly 15 years with all four members. Cobblestone Jazz was the studio name in which they recorded “23 Seconds” minus de la Planta. Now the four have come together merging both names for their latest in studio collaboration which was released on March 30th.

The result  is a mixture of deep House Chill grooves infused with Jazzy elements and strong basslines. The hypnotic opening track, “Chance Dub” is a sublime opener of transcendental bliss with an undercurrent of heavy bass. It gets re-worked as the second to last track, “Chance”, implementing whispered robotic vocals and a nice whimsical keyboard solo that layers perfectly well over the steady bassline.

“Sun Child” picks up the pace as the second track adding an optimistic syncopation of many harmonious elements. The underlying ethereal vocals further enhance the pleasurable listening experience. “Mr. Polite” moves the direction once again into a new deep and dark sound, almost sinister, yet laced with a seductive bassline that pulls you in wanting more.

After listening to the first three tracks, “Chance Dub”, “Sun Child” and “Mr. Polite”,  it’s easy to want to commit to the entire album knowing that Cobblestone Jazz has produced a freeway of divergent gems that transcend exclusive House, Jazz and Trance fused with computer generated bliss.  Other notable tracks include, “Fiesta” which was originally taken from Cobblestone Jazz’s “Traffic Jam EP” and heard on many dance floors last year. The urgent and deep grooves layer explosively alongside the synth arrangements and free form robotic vocals. “Children” is another hypnotic gem and “Midnight Sun” brings the vibe down to a steady futuristic Jazz meltdown creating a complete satisfying landing.
