“Bearcity 2″ may be about Bears, but it’s one of the best romantic comedies to come out in years By Steve V. Rodriguez

These days I usually ignore romantic comedy films, even though I was a fan of the genre back in the day. Remember films like “Seems Like Old Times” with Goldie Hawn, and “Love Actually” with that all star cast? Those were the days when the writing was not contrived and cliche, and the acting was spot on.

I would have never guessed I would have fallen in love with A: a sequel to a film I had never seen the original, and B: a film that’s primarily about the Bear community. “BearCity 2: The Proposal” showed recently at Outfest in L.A. to a packed house at the Ford theater. The story follows a group of New York Bears and Cubs, (look it up…) who head to P-Town (Province Town) during what’s known as Bear Week, to get their friend’s hitched. Part of the fun is getting to know what P-Town is all about, i.e. tea dance, dick dock, drag queens and the beautiful area situated in Cape Cod.

Steve V. w/ Stephen Guarino

Writer and Director, Doug Langway has written a fresh and hilarious story that is about true friendships, finding love and the dramas that often ensue when jealousies and insecurities arise. The entire ensemble are well cast, in particular Stephen

Steve V. w/Gerald McCullouch

Guarino, from “Happy Endings”, who is hilarious as always and works opposite Kathy Najimy who plays his mother. Najimy looks beautiful and  keeps up with her own brilliant oneliners! Gerald McCullouch is also well cast as an older, but very handsome ‘daddy’ type who is about to marry, the adorable, Tyler, played by Joe Conti.

By the end of “BearCity2” you will have fallen in love with all the characters, and if you’re like me, hope for a 3rd installment.

“BearCity 2: The Proposal” plays this Sunday, July 29th at the Castro Theatre: 429 Castro Street, San Francisco, CA. I thoroughly enjoyed Bearcity 2: The Proposal. It certainly is the gateway romantic comedy that appeals to more than one segment of the community. I testify as a st8 black female that this movie made me laugh as well as made me growl (like a momma bear) where appropriate. Saw it at The Castro on Sunday and can’t wait for the dvd to come out. As I told a friend, it’s no wonder that as children we loved bears of all kinds; fictional (Yogi and Boo Boo) and stuffed…now the Human Bear has growled its way into our hearts.

When you see this movie, you’ll come out of the theater and the first big hairy man you meet will make you smile.
