I think something happened to Heklina when she was on her Queens Overboard cruise with Peaches Christ.
She’s back – but she’ll be playing a man. Has this become a topsy-turvy world? Heklina is so popular and famous in drag that one would never think she’d take on a male role. But she will in the upcoming Peaches Christ production, “Drag Becomes Her,” playing March 10 at the Castro Theatre.
“Drag Becomes Her” is the latest creative Peaches Christ homage, saluting the Meryl Streep/Goldie Hawn movie “Death Becomes Her,” which will screen after the dragged up live version.
Heklina will take on the nerdy role Bruce Willis played in the movie, the man with the secret that can help the two stars retain their youthful appearance.
Peaches reminded me, though, that Heklina is a true thespian and has played men before. “Heklina is a hilarious and talented actor who can play all sorts of parts and I loved her male performance as Uncle Fister in our ‘Addams Apple Family Values’,” says Peaches, who was so impressed by Heklina’s performance that she cast her as Earnest in “Drag Becomes Her.”
Heklina adds, “It’s a bit of a departure for me, but I got my start in theater in SF (with the Sick & Twisted Players) doing male roles. My persona has slowly changed over the years anyway, from my beginnings as a punk rock upstart to now a full-fledged legend,” she laughs, “It’s high time for me to take some risks.”
It’s also great to see Heklina have more acting roles. Heklina agrees that some people might think she’s given up acting as she’s been in fewer productions since she stopped playing Carrie in “Sex and the City.” “I hardly do any of the productions at Oasis but in April I will be doing a re-staging of ‘TROG’ with Matthew Martin (we did this at Theater Rhino in 2006) at the club,” says Heklina.
While Heklina and Peaches take on strong roles in “Drag,” the stars taking over the Streep and Hawn roles are popular “RuPaul Drag Race” queens who have become consistent and constant crowd pleasers in Peaches Christ Productions, Jinkx Monsoon, and BenDeLaCreme. Both of these queens are comic geniuses and are well paired with our local Peaches and Heklina.
As for Peaches, the Castro Theatre seems to have become her home in which she first introduces her shows to a legion of loyal fans. “The shows are born in SF,” says Peaches. “That’s where all of the writing, set design, audio, sets, video, and costumes are created. ” She adds, “They now regularly travel to Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Provincetown, London, and Manchester.”
Peaches says she’d “love to keep touring with them so that more people in different places can experience what we’ve created. We just did ‘Mister Act’ in Fort Lauderdale and I hope we’ll get back there sometime soon.”
Her mind is always working ahead onto the next project and she chooses to announce the next show on stage at her current show. I am a really good guesser and her next show is going to be a great one. I can’t give it away but I will say it’s one of the most quoted movies of all time with very clever dialog. And, in the hands of Peaches Christ, the dialog will be even wittier.
