Sexy “Kinky Boots” Dances Its Way From Broadway to LA to SF by Kevin M. Thomas

“Kinky Boots” has become a buzz again with some new cast members on Broadway and a tour currently playing in Los Angeles.

I caught up with the current Broadway production to prepare me for when it comes to San Francisco in December. Okay, so I really didn’t need to prep for its San Francisco production, it’s just a fun, uplifting show that I had to see it again.

“Kinky Boots,” Tony winner for Best Musical and Best Actor, is still packing them in at New York’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

This show, based upon a film with the same name and with songs by Cyndi Lauper, is about a young man trying to save his family shoe company. Apparently quality and pride in craftsmanship plays a lesser role in this English town in which people opt for cheap poorly crafted shoes. Thus, “Kinky Boots” is born – a sexy boot aimed at the niche market of drag queens (so the heel can withstand the weight of a man).

This show remains fun, colorful, lively and full of energy and positive messages that even the grinch who stole Christmas might decide to give it back after seeing “Kinky Boots.”

Kyle Taylor Parker as Lola

My repeat performance of Broadway “Boots” happened to have understudy Timothy Ware in the lead role of Lola, which won Billy Porter his Tony Award.

Ware is fresh and vibrant. His voice isn’t as strong or nuanced as Porter’s, but his dancing is flawless and he certainly commands our attention while he prances across the stage in those boots.

Andy Kelso also makes a great replacement actor for the other lead role of Charlie, whose family business is in jeopardy. Kelso gives a 100% commitment to the role as he makes you share in his emotions with each song.

Fans of bears will be happy to know that Daniel Stewart Sherman is still grrrr-licious in the supporting role of Don. He definitely has the scruff appeal and I know furry bigger gay men (and their admirers) will take notice.

The touring cast also looks like one to cheer on. Kyle Taylor Parker, who was in the original production, takes on the lead of Lola on tour. The bear in show on the road is Joe Coots, whose blue eyes might make a bear cub swoon. And then there’s Lindsay Nicole Chambers playing the love interest. Having won me over with her deadpan delivery in the web series “Submissions Only,” it will be nice to see other aspects of her talents.

Between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Costa Mesa, “Kinky Boots” will be around the West Coast through the end of the year.
